REALLY!!!
So i was in Marysville, at the skate inn, over the weekend at a friends daughters birthday party. My friend and his family are really into roller skating and go on quite a regular basis, and I join them on occasion. During the party i was standing on the wall with another friend talking when a kid skated by, i recognized the kid and pointed out to my other fiend that he was a remarkable skater. When i was doing this his new girl friend butted in with "he's native." In complete bewilderment all i can think to do was look at her and say in a sarcastic tone "really thanks for clearing that up." My point, or question rather, is why do people feel the need to point out such completely irrelevant facts like that. Would someone say "he's white" or "she's female." Thoughts??

Well I don't really know what to say about that! That is so weird! I don't think we have to make that kind of discrimination because it can hurt somebody feelings. I would not like to be seeing like that and I don't think anybody would like to be seeing like that. :(
ReplyDeleteTruly, I believe that there was no intent of purposely discriminate. It was definitely a microagression however, the part i find most concerning is even after i responded in such a incredibly sarcastic voice, purposely making her feel "bad" for her comment, she could not realize that the comment was unneeded. The fact that there was no ability to gauge the wrongfulness in the comment says a lot. I feel that not being able to see through ones own ignorance when it is pointed out, whether directly or indirectly, is what makes it hard to evolve and progress as a collective society.
ReplyDeleteWow. This kind of made me laugh a little bit. That is kind of a stupid remark of her to make. Who cares if he's native, white, black, etc. Maybe he's gotten that before and his girlfriend get the remark "but he's native" a lot. Maybe she has some doubts about him because he is Native. Who knows, but that is an irrelevant remark she made.
